Important Things for New Fathers to Know

Becoming a new father is quite a responsibility. It is extremely important that new fathers realize and understand certain things. Many of these things are geared around the child’s health. In this article, we will be discussing some things that every new father should keep in mind to ensure that their child is as healthy and safe as possible.

One of the first things that you should have – even before the baby is born – is a primary physician that specializes in children. There are special screenings for newborns that is required in most states that look for over thirty various disorders in the child. Some of these screens look for thyroid disease, diabetes, and other devastating ailments. It is important to catch these illnesses at birth so that preventive measures and treatments can begin as soon as possible. Another area that a primary physician that treats children will practice is immunizations. Starting at birth, very important immunizations are required in order to act as a form of protection against various diseases that can affect children. Children doctors can also do a few tests at birth to determine vision and hearing. Of course, these are minimal tests considering the age, but they are still an important and required step. Physicians will also rate the child’s length and weight to see if there is anything to be concerned about as far as that goes.

Fathers and mothers alike should learn basic infant and child first aid and CPR. This is vital considering infants, children can get into so many predicaments, and the proper medical personnel, like Paramedics, may not be able to make it in time. Another important thing that you can do is to keep a list of important numbers posted by the telephone. These numbers should include your child’s doctor, the local hospital, 911, local police and fire departments, and poison control. Unbelievably, many people who have experienced an emergency have forgotten the 911 number because of what is going on. Even if you know these numbers, it is very important to post them. If your child will be staying at a family member’s home, or a friend’s home, it is very important that they are posted there. It is better to be safe than sorry.

It is very important to keep your child’s doctor appointments. Regular check-ups may provide insight into a medical issue that you may not have realized was occurring with your child. Regular check-ups can also help to identify physical and mental developmental issues. They will check how your child is growing and how he responds to things. This is a vital step to your child’s growth.

Be sure that, as a father, you ensure that your child’s diet is age appropriate. If you have any questions on what is appropriate for a child to eat, consult the child’s doctor. They can give you some wonderful tips on proper foods and feeding methods. Often, a child may suffer choking because some foods are given to them too early. This can all be prevented by giving the right foods in the proper way.
